Yonkers: MAYOR SPANO ANNOUNCES YONKERS FIRE DEPARTMENT SECURES LARGEST FEMA AFG GRANT IN NEW YORK STATE
TelAve News/10882973
Yonkers, NY ~ Yonkers, NY - In a major announcement today, Mayor Mike Spano revealed that the Yonkers Fire Department has been selected to receive an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grant, totaling $887,061, is the largest awarded to any municipality in New York State this year and will go towards supporting the department's Operations and Safety programs.
"This is a significant victory for Yonkers," stated Mayor Spano. "Our firefighters are among the best in the nation, and this grant will provide them with the necessary tools and training to stay ahead of the challenges they face every day. I want to extend my gratitude to our federal partners, including U.S. Senator Schumer, for investing in the safety of our residents, businesses, and families."
The AFG funding will specifically be used to train additional firefighters to an advanced Hazardous Materials level. This will enhance the department's ability to respond to evolving chemical, industrial, and energy-system risks while also safeguarding critical infrastructure that keeps the region running smoothly. The grant was secured through United States Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, who represents the City of Yonkers.

In response to this news, Senator Schumer stated, "Yonkers' brave firefighters put their lives on the line every day to protect our community. I am proud to deliver a whopping $887,061 in federal funding - the largest AFG grant awarded in New York this cycle - which will help train new firefighters and upgrade aging infrastructure within the Yonkers Fire Department. This investment will not only keep our firefighters safe but also ensure the safety of our families. I have long fought for increased funding for AFG because I understand how crucial it is for our first responders to be well-equipped and prepared. I am grateful that this program continues to deliver results for Westchester County."
City of Yonkers Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick also expressed his enthusiasm for the grant, stating, "Securing this AFG grant is a transformative step for the Yonkers Fire Department and public safety in our region. This funding will allow us to rapidly expand our certifications and enhance our capabilities, which are essential for our Yonkers community and regional partners. It will accelerate our progress and reinforce our readiness."
The AFG program has proven to be a valuable resource for first responders across the country, providing critical funding for training, equipment, and resources. With this significant grant, the Yonkers Fire Department will be better equipped to serve and protect their community.
