Yonkers, NY ~ Yonkers, NY - In a major announcement today, Mayor Mike Spano revealed that the Yonkers Fire Department has been selected to receive an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grant, totaling $887,061, is the largest awarded to any municipality in New York State this year and will go towards supporting the department's Operations and Safety programs.

"This is a significant victory for Yonkers," stated Mayor Spano. "Our firefighters are among the best in the nation, and this grant will provide them with the necessary tools and training to stay ahead of the challenges they face every day. I want to extend my gratitude to our federal partners, including U.S. Senator Schumer, for investing in the safety of our residents, businesses, and families."

The AFG funding will specifically be used to train additional firefighters to an advanced Hazardous Materials level. This will enhance the department's ability to respond to evolving chemical, industrial, and energy-system risks while also safeguarding critical infrastructure that keeps the region running smoothly. The grant was secured through United States Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, who represents the City of Yonkers.
