5 tips to protect your Detroit home from winter storms
TelAve News/10848904
DETROIT, Dec. 12, 2024 ~ As winter approaches, Detroit residents are bracing for what is expected to be a particularly harsh season. With temperatures dropping as low as -15°F and the possibility of winter storms causing power outages, it's important for homeowners to take steps to keep their homes warm and avoid property damage. C & C Heating & Air Conditioning, a leading heating and cooling company in the Detroit area with over 70 years of experience, is sharing practical tips to help residents prepare for the upcoming winter weather.
According to Dayna Hottle, general manager of C & C Heating & Air Conditioning, winter storms can be just as damaging as any other weather system. "They can take out power and leave us without heat," she said. "We want our neighbors to stay warm this season and can help them prepare for a major winter storm with just a few tips and tricks."
One of the first steps Hottle recommends is checking doors and window seals for any cracks or gaps that could let cold air in. If any are found, they should be resealed or covered with a towel during freezing temperatures. Additionally, covering windows with a black cloth at night can help retain heat if there is a power outage caused by an ice storm.

For those with working fireplaces, it's important to stock up on wood, matches, and heating fuel in case of an extended power outage. This will provide an alternative source of heat until crews are able to restore power in the area.
Hottle also advises against turning up the thermostat too high or too quickly. This can put stress on the heating system and result in costly inefficiencies. It could also cause pipes to freeze if the unit fails. Instead, she recommends setting the thermostat to 68°F during the day and no lower than 55°F at night.
In addition to these practical steps, Hottle suggests using smart thermostats as a way to compensate for drastic temperature changes. This can help keep heating bills low and prevent the system from overheating and breaking down.
"Being without heat this winter is hard enough, so use these tips to reduce escalating costs and prevent damage to your home," Hottle said. "Our licensed and insured professionals are here to help and can work on various heating systems such as natural gas furnaces, electric heating systems, and more. If you want to avoid the frigid air common in the Metro Detroit Area, we're the team to trust."
