SMITHFIELD, R.I. - TelAve -- The system was developed for a tag holder manufacturer that needed to attach a clasp to a pocket using a hollow rivet. To understand how riveting works, rivets are permanent fasteners that feature smooth cylindrical shafts with a head on one end. There are many variations such as manual feed or automatic feed- dependent on the application. This application required precise rivet placement as well as an automatic feeding system to eliminate the need for operators to manually load individual rivets.
The customer required a riveting press that could consistently place the rivet in the specified location while incorporating an automatic feeding system to reduce manual loading. The system is also needed to accommodate the customer's existing hollow rivets using the appropriate tooling and guide rail. Because the rivets are small and prone to movement, the feeding system required precise dimensions and accurate alignment. Additionally, the clasp and pocket needed a custom fixture to ensure they could be easily and consistently positioned with the rivet head.

Using their Toggle-Aire® 1530 model, the engineers at AIM-Joraco® designed a complete solution that automatically feeds and positions the rivets with precision. On Toggle-Aire® applications, the shut height can be set so the riveted head is formed to a specific, repeatable dimension. The press then uses only the force needed to reach that closed dimension, provided the required force is within the setup capacity. AIM-Joraco® incorporated an adjustable stop roller and accessible adjustment screw to precisely calibrate the rivet location. The tooling features a base rolling tool and spring-loaded drive punch made from hardened, heat-treated tool steel for long operating life. An automatic bowl feeder and custom guide track deliver the rivets in the correct position for consistent operation. A rivet retention finger holds each rivet securely in place until the operator activates the actuator. The results speak for themselves- AIM-Joraco®'s rail guides improve rivet alignment, operator flexibility, productivity, safety, and overall riveting efficiency.
