The primary responsibility of the Advisory Board is to guide program development and approve funding recommendations that benefit all residents of Tacoma. Their functions are outlined in the Tacoma Municipal Code. However, individuals who have any financial interest in a cultural organization receiving funding from Tacoma Creates are not eligible to serve on the Advisory Board. This includes those who receive payment as staff or contractors. Volunteers who do not receive financial compensation may apply but will be required to recuse themselves from voting on matters that impact their affiliated organization.

The Advisory Board holds monthly public meetings on the first Monday of every month at 5:30 p.m., which typically last two hours. Currently, these meetings take place at the Tacoma Municipal Building but also offer a virtual option via Zoom. In addition to monthly meetings, members may also participate in application review panels and serve as outreach ambassadors to arts, culture, heritage, science organizations, and the general public. They may also receive Pierce Transit bus passes as needed to attend meetings and related programs.
