ATO Reminds Australians to Get WFH Tax Claims Right, Nanak Accountants Offers Expert Support
TelAve News/10868121
New ATO rules for claiming WFH expenses apply from 1 July 2024 — Nanak Accountants helps clients claim smarter and avoid costly mistakes.
MELBOURNE, Australia - TelAve -- Work from Home? Get Your Deductions Right
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has updated its guidance for work-from-home tax deductions for the 2024–25 financial year. With millions of Australians still working remotely, the ATO is urging taxpayers to understand the rules — or risk making costly mistakes.
Nanak Accountants & Associates is here to help Australians claim confidently, avoid errors, and maximise their tax refund.
Two Methods, One Smart Choice
The ATO now offers two methods for claiming your work-from-home expenses:
✅ Fixed Rate Method – 70c/hour
This method is simpler. You track your hours and claim 70 cents per hour worked from home. It covers electricity, internet, phone, and stationery. You can still separately claim depreciation on your home office equipment like desks or laptops.

✅ Actual Cost Method
This one takes more effort. You calculate and prove the exact work-use portion of each bill — internet, phone, electricity — and keep all your receipts. It can offer a higher deduction, but only if you've had large expenses and kept full records.
Our Advice: Don't Guess. Check What Works for You.
Some taxpayers go straight for the fixed rate. Others assume actual cost is better. But it depends on your setup.
"People working from a dedicated home office with big expenses might benefit from the actual cost method," says Puneet Singh, Director at Nanak Accountants. "But for most people, the new fixed rate is easier — and often just as effective."
What You Can Claim
If you're working from home, you may be able to claim:
But remember: claims must be for work use only — not personal. And shared spaces like the kitchen table? They often don't qualify.

No records? No deduction. The ATO can reject your claim or amend your return.
