Back-to-School Anxiety: Tips for Kids & Teens | Ocean Partnership for Children
TelAve News/10904349
Learn how Ocean County families can help children and teens manage back-to-school anxiety and find support.
TOMS RIVER, N.J. - TelAve -- The return to school can bring excitement, nervousness, or anxiety for children and teens. To help Ocean County families prepare for a smooth transition, Victoria Azzopardi, LCSW, CEO of Ocean Partnership for Children (OPC), offers guidance for easing back into school routines and addressing back-to-school anxiety.
Start Preparing Early
Two to three weeks before school begins, families can gradually re-establish regular bedtimes, mealtimes, and morning routines. "School routine at any age is important and the earlier you start, the better off you are," Azzopardi said. She recommends involving children and teens in planning a visual routine that includes homework, playtime, dinner, electronic use, and preparation for the week.
Make the First Days Easier
For children entering a new school, visiting the building beforehand can help make the unfamiliar more comfortable. During the first few days, caregivers should also make time for connection at home through a family game, favorite show or movie, or outdoor activity. Preparation, open communication, and consistent support can help children approach the new school year with confidence.

Stay Organized
Families can reduce stress by gathering school supplies, creating a dedicated homework space, and preparing backpacks and clothing the night before. Once school begins, regularly checking the school portal for assignments, announcements, and deadlines can help children stay on track. A weekly organization routine can also help manage schoolwork and responsibilities.
Talk About Back-to-School Anxiety
Parents and caregivers should begin conversations early by asking open-ended questions such as, "How are you feeling about school starting?" "If a child or teen is stressed or anxious, it is important to be fully present and actively listen without minimizing their feelings or trying to fix the situation," Azzopardi said. Giving children space to express concerns without judgment helps them feel understood and supported.
Recognize Signs of Anxiety
Some nervousness about school is normal. Caregivers should watch for persistent or significant changes, including excessive worry, irritability, unexplained crying, difficulty concentrating, changes in eating or sleeping, physical complaints, restlessness, or increased clinginess. If concerns continue, Ocean County families can reach out to their child's school counselor, pediatrician, or another trusted professional for guidance, including Ocean Partnership for Children.
