Bestselling Thriller Author Don Bentley Sends a Message to Children With Dyslexia
TelAve News/10906469
The American Dyslexia Association publishes a personal note from the New York Times bestselling author of the Mitch Rapp novels, who points to Vince Flynn's dyslexia ahead of his new thriller Double Tap, out September 22.
SARASOTA, Fla. - TelAve -- The American Dyslexia Association has published a message from New York Times bestselling author Don Bentley to children who find reading hard, and to the families sitting at the kitchen table with them.
The nonprofit wrote to Bentley with a small request: a few sentences of encouragement for children with dyslexia. He answered within the week.
"Dyslexia is an obstacle, but it doesn't have to be a limitation," Bentley wrote. "My favorite author, Vince Flynn, was dyslexic and his thirteen novels reflect the creative, out of the box thinking common among dyslexics. Writing was a struggle for Vince, but his perseverance birthed one of commercial fiction's most iconic protagonists, Mitch Rapp, and delighted millions of readers. Don't give up—the world needs what's waiting inside of you too!"

Before he became a novelist, Bentley flew Apache helicopters for the U.S. Army and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal with "V" device for valor in Afghanistan. He later served as an FBI special agent. Today he writes the Matt Drake thrillers and continues the Mitch Rapp series created by the late Vince Flynn.
Flynn was open about his dyslexia. After a stack of rejection letters he published his first novel himself in 1997. The character he created still fills shelves in airports and libraries around the world.
"Children with dyslexia decide very early that books are for other people," said Dr. Livia R. Pailer-Duller of the American Dyslexia Association. "Hearing that one of the most widely read thriller writers of his generation had the same fight with words, and that a bestselling author of today calls him his favorite, does more than anything we could write ourselves. Parents, read this one out loud."
It is the first in a series of author messages the association is collecting for young readers. The full post is on the association's blog at dyslexia.me (https://www.dyslexia.me/don-bentley-message-dyslexic-children/).
