~ The City of Bloomington has announced an exciting addition to the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. After the primary program organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission, community members will have the opportunity to gather at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater for a free viewing of the College Football National Championship.

The watch party, which will take place at 7:30 p.m., is open to attendees who choose to stay after the MLK program as well as other community members who wish to attend. This optional event is intended to promote community togetherness and does not replace or alter the MLK Day commemoration.

The MLK Day program, which will begin at 5:30 p.m., will focus on honoring the contributions of women in the civil rights movement. Titled "Soul, Spirit & Sacrifice: Honoring the Legacy of Coretta Scott King and the Women Who Faced America to Save Us," this year's commemoration will feature keynote speaker Dr. Traci Parker, musical performances, and the presentation of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award.

Due to scheduling conflicts related to the game, scheduled performer Marietta Simpson will no longer be able to participate in the program. However, three students from the African American Choral Ensemble (AACE) have been added to perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

Both events are free and open to the public, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis at the 600-seat theater. Attendees of the MLK program are welcome to remain in their seats for the game viewing if they choose. Concessions will also be available for purchase in the theater lobby.

In preparation for these events, please note that there will be no parking on Monday, January 19 on certain blocks of E Kirkwood Ave and N/S Dunn St.

The City of Bloomington is excited to offer this additional opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
