Bloomington: Controlled Deer Hunts Scheduled at Griffy Lake Nov. 14-15 and 21-22
TelAve News/10911075
~ Bloomington Parks and Recreation will hold controlled deer hunts at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve on Nov. 14–15 and Nov. 21–22 as part of efforts to manage the deer population and support the forest ecosystem's long-term health and diversity.
The preserve will close to all public access and recreational use from 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, until 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, and again from 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, until 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23.
The closures cover all trails, shoreline areas and the entire lake. Hiking, fishing, boating and other recreational activities will be prohibited, and no watercraft may be launched during either hunt weekend.
The department says the hunts are intended to reduce deer browsing on young trees, wildflowers and other understory plants. Excessive browsing can hinder tree seedlings and reduce the abundance and diversity of native plants, according to the department.

Bloomington Parks and Recreation has conducted controlled hunts and deer culls at the preserve since 2017 as part of its natural resource management work. The department monitors vegetation to assess the efforts and guide future management decisions.
Participation is limited to hunters selected through the department's application process. Hunting by anyone not authorized to take part is prohibited, and the preserve remains closed to general public hunting.
Information about the program, including past harvests and plant-height monitoring results, is available on the Deer at Griffy Lake website. For updates, the department advises the public to follow Parks and Recreation on Facebook or call 812-349-3700.
