~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington has announced the recipient of the 2026 Living Legend award as local historian, cultural preservationist, and storyteller Elizabeth Mitchell. Mitchell has dedicated over 50 years to preserving African American history and elevating community voices through various initiatives such as installing historic markers for formerly segregated schools, producing documentaries, and advocating for the recognition and celebration of our shared history.

The announcement was made during the city's Black History Month observance, which began earlier this month with a Community Kickoff event. At this event, Muhammad Saahir was recognized as the 2026 Visionary Leader Award recipient.

In addition to these recognitions, the City will also be hosting its annual Youth Poster Board Contest on Saturday, February 21 at Bloomington City Hall. The contest is open to students in grades 4-12 and will award first, second, and third-place prizes in three categories: Elementary (Grades 4-6), Middle (Grades 7-8), and High School (Grades 9-12). This event is free and open to the public.

The Black History Month events will conclude with a Gala on Saturday, February 28 at Woolery Mill. The evening will begin with a reception and silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by a program at 7 p.m. The program will honor Elizabeth Mitchell as the Living Legend recipient and recognize outstanding black leaders of tomorrow from the Commission on the Status of Black Males.

Tickets for the Gala are $60 each and must be purchased in advance from the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. They can be purchased online at bctboxoffice.org or by calling 812-323-3020. Due to high demand, tickets are expected to sell quickly.
