~ Bloomington Police Department Receives Third Consecutive CALEA Accreditation

On July 25th, 2026, the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) was awarded full Tier 1 accreditation status by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) for the third time. This prestigious award, which will remain in effect for four years, recognizes BPD's commitment to providing competent and professional policing services to the Bloomington community.

Chief Michael Diekhoff expressed his pride in the department's achievement, stating that "our accreditation through CALEA ensures that we remain at the forefront of modern policing and utilize the very best policies and procedures to protect those we serve." BPD was first awarded full Tier 1 law enforcement accreditation in July of 2018 and has since maintained its high standards.

CALEA accreditation is considered the gold standard in law enforcement accreditation and embodies the principles of community-oriented policing. Out of approximately 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States, only about 5% are CALEA accredited. This recognition highlights BPD's dedication to upholding internationally accepted public safety standards.

The process of CALEA accreditation is rigorous and requires a thorough review of all department policies, practices, and processes to ensure compliance with over 180 CALEA standards. These standards are reviewed annually by public safety professionals and subject matter experts. Independent assessors were responsible for reviewing all documentation provided by BPD as well as seeking public feedback and conducting structured interviews with agency personnel and community stakeholders.

After compiling a final report, independent assessors submitted their findings to a governing body of twenty-one CALEA Commissioners for consideration following a public hearing and review. The review took place in Omaha, Nebraska on July 24th with the Commissioners voting to award full Tier 1 accreditation on July 25th.

Mayor Kerry Thomson praised BPD's achievement, stating that "earning CALEA accreditation is a significant achievement" and "earning it for a third consecutive cycle reflects a sustained commitment to excellence by our Bloomington Police Department." She also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of BPD officers and professional staff, whose efforts have helped strengthen the foundation of a thriving Bloomington community.

With this third consecutive CALEA accreditation, the Bloomington Police Department has solidified its position as a leader in modern policing and continues to strive for excellence in serving and protecting its community.
