Boston: Council Adopts Resolution Supporting Full Funding for Veterans' Services
TelAve News/10895592
~ During the latest Council meeting, Councilors Murphy and Flynn presented a resolution calling for support of a budget amendment to fully fund the Office of Veterans' Services in the upcoming FY27 budget. The resolution was unanimously adopted by the Council.
The resolution highlights the vital role that the Office of Veterans' Services plays in providing outreach, assistance, programming, advocacy, and support to veterans, military families, and surviving spouses in Boston. It also brings attention to the proposed FY27 budget which includes a significant reduction of approximately $724,000 to the department, representing a cut of more than 14%.
According to the resolution, the Office of Veterans' Services is one of the smallest funded departments in the City and would struggle to absorb such a large reduction without impacting its services and programming. The resolution emphasizes that restoring this proposed cut would only represent a modest amount within the overall City budget but would have a significant impact on veterans, military families, and surviving spouses.

Furthermore, this is the first budget cycle since the Council received budget amendment authority where they are facing cuts rather than having surplus funds to add to departments. This fact is noted in the resolution as well.
Councilors Murphy and Flynn have announced their intention to file a budget amendment that would restore the approximately $724,000 reduction and fully fund the Office of Veterans' Services. They believe that it is crucial for this department to receive adequate funding in order to continue providing essential services and support for those who have served our country.
