~ Bostonians have a long-standing tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July, and as the 250th anniversary approaches, it's worth taking a look at how this day has been commemorated over the years.
In 1876, for the 100th anniversary, the City Council of Boston made a special effort to honor the occasion. They ordered the printing of 500 copies of the Declaration of Independence and George Washington's farewell address, with a budget not exceeding $500. These commemorative volumes were highly valued by Bostonians and served as a reminder of their country's history.
One of the oldest traditions associated with Independence Day in Boston is the annual Fourth of July Oration. This tradition dates back to 1783 when, with independence secured after the Revolutionary War, the Boston Selectmen voted to hold an oration on this day. The first official oration was delivered by Dr. John Warren at Brattle Street Church. Over the years, notable speakers such as John Quincy Adams, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and John F. Kennedy have delivered speeches at this event.

In addition to orations, there were many other activities and events that were part of Fourth of July celebrations in Boston during the nineteenth century. In 1859, members of the City Government could attend a dinner at Faneuil Hall. In 1868, spectators could witness a balloon ascension and tight rope performance on Boston Common. And in 1884 and 1887 respectively, there were hurling matches on Boston Common and swimming matches on Charles River.
Of course, no Fourth of July celebration would be complete without fireworks! In 1863, tickets were issued by the City Council Committee on Celebrations for people to attend fireworks displays.
As we approach this year's Independence Day Exercises marking the 250th anniversary in Boston, it is clear that this city has a rich history when it comes to celebrating this important day in American history. So, how do you plan on celebrating this year? Be sure to check out the schedule for this year's events and join in the festivities. Happy Fourth of July!
