Boston: Public Health Warning Issued Related To Recent Sewage Discharge

TelAve News/10878395
BOSTON ~ Boston residents are being warned of a potential health risk due to a recent sewage discharge in the Fort Point Channel. The Boston Water and Sewer Commission issued a public health warning on Monday, October 13, 2025, following a combined sewer overflow (CSO) at outfall BOS070.

According to state regulations, local public health departments are required to notify the public when these discharges occur and may pose a risk to public health. A CSO happens when heavy rainfall overwhelms the combined sewerage system, causing rainwater to mix with wastewater and discharge into nearby water bodies. This is done to prevent sewage backups into homes and businesses.

The advisory states that the public should avoid contact with affected water bodies for at least 48 hours after a sewage discharge or overflow, as well as during rainstorms and for 48 hours after they end. This is due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants associated with urban stormwater runoff and untreated or partially treated wastewater.
