California: Governor Newsom announces deadline extension to apply for federal assistance for Los Angeles fires

TelAve News/10856337
~ Governor Gavin Newsom has announced an extension to the deadline for survivors of the Los Angeles fires to apply for federal aid. The new deadline, March 31, 2025, will allow homeowners, renters, and workers who have suffered losses from the wildfires to register for assistance through DisasterAssistance.gov.

The request for an extension was made by Governor Newsom and has been granted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This extension also applies to the deadline for applying for Disaster Unemployment Insurance.

Individuals and households affected by the wildfires can now apply for FEMA Individual Assistance and Small Business Administration assistance until March 31. This program provides financial and other forms of aid to eligible individuals and households to help with their basic needs and recovery efforts.

Governor Newsom expressed his gratitude towards FEMA and the Trump Administration for granting California's request. He urged those impacted by the Eaton and Palisades fires to take advantage of this opportunity to get back on their feet.

FEMA assistance can cover rental assistance, temporary housing, home repairs, personal property losses, and other disaster-related needs that are not covered by insurance. These grants do not have to be repaid and are nontaxable. They also do not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid, or other federal benefits.

The previous deadline for registration was March 10 but has been extended due to a bipartisan effort from California's congressional delegation. This extension will allow more survivors to sign up for assistance.

To apply for FEMA Individual Assistance, individuals can do so online at DisasterAssistance.gov or through the FEMA App. They can also call the FEMA Helpline or visit a Disaster Recovery Center in person. It is recommended that survivors file a claim with their insurance company before applying for FEMA assistance.

The deadline to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance has also been extended until March 31. This program is specifically designed for workers who are not eligible for regular unemployment benefits and have lost their jobs or had their hours reduced due to the wildfires.

Governor Newsom also issued an executive order to maintain protections for Los Angeles firestorm survivors, ensuring they have access to rental housing. This is part of ongoing efforts to support those affected by the wildfires and help them recover.

In addition to federal aid, California is investing nearly $300 million in traffic safety projects to protect public safety across the state. These funds will go towards 288 projects aimed at improving roadways and reducing accidents.

For more information on other forms of assistance and updates on wildfire recovery, individuals can visit CA.gov/LAfires. Those who have been denied FEMA assistance can submit an appeal by visiting a Disaster Recovery Center, calling the FEMA Helpline, or going online to disasterassistance.gov.

Governor Newsom also announced several appointments today, including Andrew Rakestraw as Chair of the Board of Environmental Safety. Rakestraw brings a wealth of experience as a Senior Climate Negotiator and U.S. Deputy Head of Delegation to the position.
