California: Governor Newsom extends protections for LA firestorm survivors

TelAve News/10856291
~ Governor Gavin Newsom has extended protections for survivors of the devastating Los Angeles firestorms through an executive order issued today. The order aims to ensure that those affected by the fires have access to rental housing and are protected from exploitation.

The executive order extends state price gouging restrictions for rental housing, hotels, and short-term housing until July 1, 2025. This includes prohibitions on evictions of tenants in order to relist the rental at a higher rate. However, large homes in zip codes with high fair market values that have not recently been on the rental market are exempt from this restriction in order to make them available for rental during recovery efforts. Additionally, newly constructed housing will also be exempt in order to increase the housing supply and allow for pricing flexibility.

Furthermore, the order suspends laws that would classify occupants of hotels, motels, and temporary housing as tenants after 30 days. This gives people more time to find alternative housing and prevents them from being taken advantage of by landlords.

In addition to these measures, the executive order prioritizes fire survivors experiencing homelessness on waiting lists for state-funded housing. This will allow them to secure housing faster and follows a similar approach taken by the federal government in response to emergencies.

Governor Newsom emphasized his commitment to providing targeted relief and assistance as the Los Angeles community continues to recover and rebuild. He stated, "Today I am issuing an executive order to further ensure that survivors are protected from exploitation and can access housing they need."

The governor's executive order also includes support for rebuilding two commercial corridors in Altadena to their pre-fire character. This will not only help small businesses but also create walkable and vibrant community spaces.

This news comes as California's economy is forging ahead with Pacific Steel Group breaking ground on the state's first new steel mill in 50 years. The Mojave Micro Mill will bring economic growth to Kern County and revolutionize the industry with its first-of-its-kind zero carbon emissions steel.

Governor Newsom's actions have been praised by foresters, firefighters, community leaders, and wildfire experts. They see his state of emergency proclamation as a way to remove red tape and increase the pace and scale of forest management in California. This is especially important following the devastation caused by recent wildfires.

As rain is expected in the coming days, Governor Newsom has directed his Office of Emergency Services to coordinate with key partners to strategically preposition critical resources in order to protect fire-impacted communities in Los Angeles County. This proactive approach shows the governor's dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Californians.

The full executive order can be found on the governor's website. With these measures in place, Governor Newsom hopes to provide much-needed relief and support for those affected by the Los Angeles firestorms.
