California: Governor Newsom statement on compromise to address wildfire risk, support fire survivors, and create stronger accountability
TelAve News/10905025
~ In a recent press release, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a compromise reached on Senate Bill 492 (Petrie-Norris) to address the ongoing issue of wildfire risk in California. The three-party compromise aims to not only reduce the risk of wildfires, but also provide support for fire survivors and hold utility companies accountable.
According to Governor Newsom, the compromise includes measures to prevent hedge funds from profiting off of wildfire survivors, prohibit utility executives from receiving bonuses if their company is responsible for starting a fire, and expedite financial assistance for survivors. Additionally, the bill establishes a Statewide Community Wildfire Strategy to better coordinate prevention and preparedness efforts across the state.
While this is seen as progress for future fire survivors, Governor Newsom emphasizes that more needs to be done. He urges the Legislature to continue working towards full structural reform in order to secure the long-term durability of the Wildfire Fund, stabilize electricity rates, and ensure that fire victims are not left as unsecured creditors in bankruptcy proceedings.

In other recent news, Governor Newsom has announced $44 million in funding for 15 projects aimed at protecting biodiversity and expanding access to nature for Californians. This is part of California's goal to conserve 30% of its lands and coastal waters by 2030.
Additionally, Governor Newsom has signed AB 1956, a bipartisan measure that strengthens suicide prevention efforts for boys and young men. This adds boys and men as a group of focus for the California Office of Suicide Prevention.
Lastly, California is investing $2.7 billion in over 150 transportation projects to improve safety on highways, strengthen infrastructure against extreme weather caused by climate change, and increase accessibility for all Californians.
Governor Newsom's actions demonstrate his commitment to addressing pressing issues facing California such as wildfires, conservation efforts, mental health support, and transportation improvements. As he continues his term as governor, it is clear that he will continue to prioritize the well-being and safety of Californians.
