California: ICYMI: Law signed by Governor Newsom helps pave the way for the world's largest union of rideshare drivers
TelAve News/10903948
~ Sacramento, CA - In a historic move, California has become home to the world's largest union of gig drivers. This milestone was made possible by a groundbreaking legislation championed by Governor Gavin Newsom and the Legislature, which provides a pathway to unionization for rideshare workers.
The California Gig Workers Union has reached the support threshold to represent gig drivers throughout the state, as verified by the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB). This means that after a 30-day waiting period, the union can be certified as the collective bargaining representative for Lyft and Uber drivers.
Governor Newsom expressed his support for this achievement, stating that "Today is a new day for rideshare drivers who have spent a decade fighting for a stronger voice on the job." He also emphasized that in a time when workers' rights are under attack and families are struggling with affordability due to the current administration, California is setting an example of standing with working people.
The road to union representation began in 2025 when Governor Newsom signed AB 1340 (Wicks, Berman), which gave hundreds of thousands of rideshare drivers in California the choice to unionize and engage in collective bargaining over wages, benefits, and working conditions. This move was seen as crucial in protecting workers' rights at a time when many feel abandoned by their government.
