California: PSA: Earvin "Magic" Johnson warns Los Angeles fire victims about property predators
TelAve News/10853740
~ Los Angeles, CA - In the wake of the devastating firestorms that swept through Los Angeles, Governor Gavin Newsom, LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman, Dodgers Chairman Mark Walter, and NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson have joined forces to release a new public service announcement (PSA) through LA Rises. The PSA aims to warn fire victims about predatory real estate speculators and educate them about their rights under the Governor's recent executive order.
The order, which was issued earlier this month, prohibits unsolicited and undervalued offers for three months in fire-affected communities. This measure is intended to prevent opportunistic investors from taking advantage of families in crisis by offering lowball prices for their properties.
In the PSA, Magic Johnson urges homeowners to be cautious of predatory investors and reminds them that they have the power to reject any unsolicited offers. He also highlights the importance of reporting any such offers to law enforcement agencies like the LA District Attorney or the California Attorney General.

The video can be downloaded by TV networks statewide and features Johnson emphasizing the need to protect communities from displacement and ensure fair treatment for families as they navigate the recovery process.
LA Rises, a unified recovery initiative co-chaired by Johnson, has been working towards supporting rebuilding efforts in Los Angeles. The initiative also focuses on providing accurate information, timelines for rebuilding, and available resources to help Angelenos during this difficult time.
Governor Newsom's executive order not only addresses predatory real estate practices but also directs agencies like the Department of Real Estate to provide resources on homeowners' rights and enforcement measures. It also enables prosecution of violators by both state and local authorities.
To further protect survivors from exploitation and price gouging, California law makes it a misdemeanor to violate a Governor's order during a state of emergency. Violators can be prosecuted by either the Attorney General or local district attorneys.

To report any lowball offers, individuals can contact the California Attorney General's Office at oag.ca.gov/report or call (800) 952-5225. They can also reach out to the LA District Attorney's Office at (800) 380-3811. The California Department of Real Estate's LA WildFire Updates page also allows individuals to submit complaints.
In addition to this executive order, Governor Newsom has taken several other actions to support survivors and aid in rebuilding efforts. These include creating more temporary housing and meeting with bipartisan U.S. House and Senate leaders to secure critical disaster aid for firestorm survivors.
As we approach one month since the firestorms, Governor Newsom has made it clear that supporting Los Angeles in its recovery is his top priority. He continues to lead a whole-of-government response and is committed to building a more resilient state for future disasters.
