California shatters training records with 650 new CAL FIRE officers in 2025
TelAve News/10881943
~ In a historic year for California, the state has shattered all previous records by training over 650 new Company Officers in 2025. This achievement was celebrated by Governor Gavin Newsom at the graduation ceremony of 38 CAL FIRE Company Officers from the Ione Training Center.
The governor expressed his pride in this milestone and highlighted the importance of investing in fire readiness and response, especially in the face of climate challenges. While federal readiness for mega-fires has been undercut by Donald Trump, California continues to dominate with key investments in fire protection and readiness.
CAL FIRE has successfully trained these new Company Officers through four training centers operating at full capacity. The newest facility, the Atwater Training Center in Merced County, opened in July 2025 to meet the growing demand for training. Additional facilities are located in Redding and Riverside.
This accomplishment is a testament to CAL FIRE's commitment to developing highly skilled and professional leaders to serve the state. In his keynote address, CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler acknowledged the efforts required to meet this workforce demand and commended both the graduates and training staff for maintaining high standards throughout this record-breaking year.

The final cohort, Company Officer Academy Class 25-14, marked the successful conclusion of the intensive 2025 training season with their graduation ceremony. These 38 graduates are now equipped with the necessary skills to take on leadership roles within CAL FIRE.
During the ceremony, Chief Joe Tyler administered an oath to the graduating cadets, solidifying their commitment to serving California's communities.
Governor Newsom also highlighted California's investment into wildfire response and prevention capabilities. Since 2020, the state has doubled its investment into these efforts, totaling over $2.5 billion. An additional $1.5 billion will be allocated from the 2024 Climate Bond.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom announced that California has joined the Northwest Wildland Fire Fighting Compact, expanding mutual aid partnerships during major wildfire incidents to include partners from the United States and Canada.
In addition to these efforts, California has also invested $173 million for community-based wildfire projects, aimed at helping communities protect themselves from wildfires.

In other news, Governor Newsom has been working towards improving state government efficiency. He recently announced five new projects that have been completed as a result of his efforts to identify areas for improvement.
First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom also made headlines by hosting the annual Gender Equity Summit, focusing on building a safer tomorrow for all in the age of innovative technology.
Lastly, Governor Newsom's expanded deployment of the California Highway Patrol in key regions throughout the state has yielded impressive results. In just three months, nearly 2,000 pounds of illegal drugs have been seized as a result of this increased enforcement. This highlights the governor's commitment to public safety and his efforts to combat drug trafficking in California.
