CastoTube® Wear-Resistant Piping for Abrasive Industrial Transport
TelAve News/10906472
Abrasive materials can quickly wear through conventional piping, causing frequent repairs and costly shutdowns. Discover how CastoTube® resists abrasion, erosion, and impact—and helped a cement plant triple its service interval.
MONTREAL - TelAve -- Piping systems in mining, cement, pulp and paper, recycling, and industrial processing often face severe abrasion, erosion, and impact. High-velocity solids, slurry, tailings, fibre, sand, powders, and mixed materials can rapidly wear through conventional carbon steel, stainless steel, plastic, or ceramic-lined pipework—especially at elbows, reducers, junctions, and other points where flow direction or velocity changes.
Premature pipe failure can cause unplanned shutdowns, production losses, emergency repairs, and frequent replacements. Selecting the right piping is therefore essential to plant reliability, maintenance frequency, and total operating cost.
Designed for Abrasive Material Flow
CastoTube® is an internally hardfaced pipe designed to transport abrasive materials in demanding industrial environments. Alloy selection and single- or double-pass deposition can be specified according to the abrasion, erosion, and impact conditions in each system section.

Its internal cladding protects straight pipes, elbows, reducers, Y-pieces, and custom-fabricated components. CastoTube® can also be configured for complex layouts and installation constraints, with various diameters, lengths, flanges, and connection systems.
Typical applications include:
Where Wear Concentrates
Abrasive particles, velocity, pressure, and directional changes can create localized wear zones, particularly at bends and reductions where turbulence and particle impact increase. Without the right protection, these areas can become recurring maintenance problems.
At one cement plant, pneumatic waste transport from the crusher to the kiln caused severe wear in straight pipes and elbows. Plastics, textiles, metals, and paper moved through the system at approximately 25 m/s. Stainless steel and ceramic piping lasted only about four months, requiring several corrective maintenance interventions each year.

Castolin Eutectic supplied 128 metres of CastoTube®, including straight sections, six elbows, DN150 PN10/16 flanges, and a flexible section for installation tolerances. The system then operated for approximately 12 months between maintenance interventions, tripling the previous service interval.
From Component Replacement to Wear Management
For operations transporting abrasive solids, slurry, paste, or mixed materials, CastoTube® supports a more planned wear-management approach. By matching pipework to actual wear conditions, plants can improve reliability, reduce maintenance exposure, and maintain more consistent process flow where conventional materials are no longer sufficient.
