Chicago: ICYMI: Mayor Brandon Johnson Stands With LGBTQ+ Leaders During Transgender Awareness Week

CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with Center on Halsted CEO Joli Robinson, Ald. Lamont Robinson (4th), Alderwoman Jeanette Taylor (20th), MWRD Commissioner Precious Brady-Davis, Equality Illinois CEO Channyn Lynne Parker, Life is Work CEO Zahara Bassett, and members of the LGBTQ+ community gathered today to raise awareness for Transgender Day of Remembrance and Transgender Awareness Week.
During his remarks at the event, Mayor Johnson expressed the importance of remembering those who have been lost and recognizing the progress that has been made in creating a city that is committed to honoring their sacrifices.
The mayor also met with LGBTQ+ advocates to discuss the challenges facing members of Chicago's transgender community. Attendees were able to explore key moments and figures in the history of Chicago's LGBTQ+ community.
Trans Day of Remembrance serves as an opportunity to commemorate those who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence while also celebrating the resilience of the trans community. Center on Halsted, known as the Midwest's most comprehensive LGBTQ+ community center, provides a range of services including mental health support, youth programs, HIV/STI care, and senior support while also leading arts and cultural engagement.

Joli Robinson emphasized the importance of Transgender Day of Remembrance and Transgender Awareness Week in honoring those who have been lost and recognizing the vibrancy of the trans community. She reaffirmed her organization's commitment to supporting their safety, dignity, and visibility.
Mayor Johnson reiterated his administration's dedication to building a more inclusive city where all LGBTQ+ Chicagoans feel safe and supported. He acknowledged that while Chicago has a proud and vibrant LGBTQ+ community that has made significant contributions to its neighborhoods, there is still work to be done in terms of civil rights, gender affirming healthcare access, and overall safety for members of this community.
He also addressed the attempts by some individuals and politicians to marginalize the trans community, stating that such actions do not work in Chicago. He emphasized that the city cares about the everyday issues that affect all of its residents, such as the cost of living, housing, healthcare, and security.
