Chicago: Mayor Brandon Johnson Signs Executive Order Directing Citywide Response To Address Upcoming Snap 'Benefits Cliff'

CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Signs Executive Order to Address SNAP Benefits Crisis
In response to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits caused by the government shutdown and upcoming changes to eligibility requirements, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an executive order directing additional resources to local community organizations, non-profits, food pantries, and faith institutions.
The order, which was signed today, authorizes emergency procurement flexibility to expedite the distribution of City resources in order to combat hunger and food insecurity resulting from these cuts. Mayor Johnson stated, "We cannot accept Chicagoans going hungry as a result of the Trump administration's war on poor and working people."
While much attention has been focused on the gap in SNAP funding due to the shutdown, Mayor Johnson also emphasized the longer-term crisis resulting from cuts to SNAP as part of President Trump's signature bill. He added that this executive order will mobilize City departments and allow for partnerships with philanthropic organizations to provide food where it is needed most.

A video of Mayor Johnson's remarks at the signing can be found on the City's website. The Executive Order also aims to support independently owned retailers and restaurants that have been impacted by reduced SNAP purchasing power and fear-driven drops in foot traffic due to escalated immigration enforcement.
The Mayor's Office will work closely with the Department of Public Health (CDPH), Department of Family & Support Services (DFSS), and other relevant departments to prepare a weekly status report detailing impacts, response efforts, gaps, and urgent needs in each affected community area.
These resources will supplement existing programs administered by the City to address food insecurity. CDPH currently administers the federally funded WIC program which provides nutrition assistance for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, postpartum women, children, and infants.
The Executive Order will be available on the City Clerk's website for public access. With this action, Mayor Johnson hopes to alleviate some of the burden faced by Chicagoans during this challenging time.
