Shore community gathers to celebrate a day of surf, fun, and family
LONG BRANCH, N.J. - TelAve -- Clean Ocean Action (COA) proudly announces the return of the 8th Annual Surf Open, set for Saturday, September 27, 2025 (alternate date to be determined depending on wave conditions) at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park in Long Branch, NJ.
This signature Jersey Shore tradition unites surfers of all ages, families, and ocean enthusiasts for a full day of competition, community, and celebration in support of a clean and healthy ocean.
The Surf Open was founded by the Thompson family, whose passion for surfing and commitment to clean water have made the event a beloved Jersey Shore tradition. Scott Thompson, recently inducted into the New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame, together with his wife Mary-Beth and sons Tyler, Brett, and Mark, has long combined a love of the ocean with advocacy, supporting Clean Ocean Action and inspiring care and responsibility for the coast across generations.

The Surf Open welcomes participants of all ages – "groms" to "seniors" and draws hundreds of spectators who gather to cheer on competitors, enjoy the shoreline, and celebrate coastal stewardship. Last year's contest featured more than 90 surfers riding impressive waves, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with energy and camaraderie from dawn to dusk.
The day-long event is open to all ages and highlights some of the region's most talented surfers. Proceeds support Clean Ocean Action's year-round programs that safeguard the ocean and coastline through education, grassroots action, advocacy, and research.
"Surfing has always been about harmony with the waves," said Cindy Zipf, Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action. "The Surf Open is more than a contest. It's a celebration of the ocean we love and depend on, and a powerful reminder of why we must all work together to protect it for the future."
