Colorado: Governor Polis Encourages Coloradans and Visitors To Recreate Responsibly Ahead of the Fourth of July Holiday
TelAve News/10900530
DENVER ~ As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, Governor Jared Polis is urging all Coloradans and visitors to enjoy the state's beautiful outdoors responsibly. With the holiday falling during a time of heightened fire risk, the governor is encouraging everyone to celebrate in ways that do not increase the chances of new fires.
"Colorado is truly the best state to live, work, and play in," Governor Polis stated. "But as we celebrate our nation's 250th birthday and Colorado's 150th year of statehood, let's also support our firefighters and emergency responders by not starting any new fires this holiday weekend. Instead, let's find fun and safe ways to spend time with our families both indoors and outdoors."
The governor suggested several ideas for activities that do not involve fireworks, such as a Red, White, and Blue Iron Chef competition using Colorado Proud ingredients like Olathe Sweet Corn or Pueblo Green Chile. Other options include a glow-in-the-dark bike parade or a family talent show.

While some areas of the state are currently impacted by fire conditions, there are still many opportunities for recreation in Colorado. The state is home to 43 state parks that offer various recreational activities. However, visitors are reminded to check for any restrictions or closures in their desired areas before heading out.
In addition to celebrating Independence Day, this year also marks 250 years since America gained its independence and 150 years since Colorado became a state. To commemorate these milestones, the America 250 - Colorado 150 Commission has launched new ways for people to explore the state. These include the Colorado Passport Program which incentivizes visiting different attractions and businesses throughout Colorado and Stories in the Sky - a series of drone shows taking place across the state.
During the summer months, Colorado attracts millions of visitors from around the world who come to explore its stunning landscapes including the Rocky Mountains and alpine lakes. In 2024 alone, over 95 million travelers visited Colorado, contributing $28.5 billion to the state's economy and supporting over 457,000 jobs. To further promote tourism, the Colorado Tourism Office is sponsoring and hosting a variety of events throughout the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

For those looking for more creative ways to celebrate, there are options such as a Red, White & Blue Iron Chef competition using patriotic ingredients or hosting a neighborhood parade with decorated bikes and scooters.
Other family-friendly activities that do not involve fire include hosting a neighborhood obstacle course or scavenger hunt, playing capture the flag, visiting Golden's Original State Capitol building or riding the Mighty Argo Cable Car. For those looking for some sports entertainment on the holiday, there will be two World Cup games played between Canada and Morocco and Paraguay and France.
To ensure safe recreation and travel during this time of heightened fire risk, visitors are encouraged to check the Colorado Tourism Office website for more information. Let's all do our part to celebrate responsibly this Fourth of July weekend in beautiful Colorado.
