Colorado: Governor Polis Encourages Organizations to Submit Comments Supporting NCAR Ahead of Friday Deadline
TelAve News/10890582
DENVER ~ The future of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is currently under review by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), as the Trump Administration seeks to dismantle this renowned institution. In response, organizations and businesses across the country have been given the opportunity to provide input on the proposed changes.
Governor Jared Polis has encouraged these stakeholders to share their thoughts on the importance of keeping NCAR intact. He emphasized that NCAR's research and data have a significant impact on various industries and communities, from improving forecasting of severe weather events to supporting safer aviation and transportation.
Congressman Joe Neguse also urged Coloradans to make their voices heard before the March 13 deadline for public feedback. He highlighted NCAR's role as a vital, cutting-edge research institution and stressed the need for robust participation in the current comment period.
The capabilities developed at NCAR are crucial for a wide range of organizations and industries, including agriculture, emergency management, and transportation. These resources not only improve forecasting accuracy but also strengthen resilience to severe weather and provide valuable information for protecting lives, infrastructure, and economic activity across the country.

However, recent reports have raised concerns about potential changes to NCAR. Congressman Neguse has called for an investigation into allegations that parts of NCAR's space weather program may have been discussed for transfer to a private company before the conclusion of the public comment process. This highlights the importance of active participation in providing feedback during this critical time.
In December, the Trump Administration announced its plans to "break up" NCAR, prompting NSF to review its structure and operations. In January, they issued a Dear Colleague Letter inviting concepts and input on how best to manage NCAR's atmospheric observation systems, computing infrastructure, modeling capabilities, and training programs. This includes options for privatizing operations and facilities.
Organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders who wish to submit public comments must follow guidelines outlined in the Dear Colleague Letter and send their feedback to NSF_NCAR@nsf.gov by 11:59 pm ET on Friday, March 13, 2026.
The future of NCAR is at stake, and it is crucial for all those who rely on its research and tools to make their voices heard. The NSF's decision will have far-reaching impacts on industries, communities, and the nation as a whole. As the comment period comes to a close, it is essential for stakeholders to provide their input and ensure that NCAR's vital work continues to benefit society.
