DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In response to the Snyder Mesa Fire burning in Mesa County, Governor Polis has declared a disaster emergency today. The fire, which originated in Utah and crossed the border into Colorado, has now combined with the Jones and Knowles Fires to form the Snyder Mesa Fire. It is currently estimated to have burned over 28,000 acres.
The Governor's verbal declaration activates the State Emergency Operations Plan and directs the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) to take charge of all response, recovery, and mitigation efforts for the Snyder Mesa Fire. To assist in managing the fire and containment efforts, State and interagency engines and handcrews will be deployed, along with DFPC and interagency aviation resources. Incident management personnel will also be brought in to provide support. Additionally, DFPC will be providing administrative and financial oversight for Mesa County as well as intelligence products such as imaging, mapping, and fire behavior modeling.
The DHSEM is also actively involved in supporting Mesa County's Emergency Manager at their operations center by providing on-site area field managers. The State is closely monitoring this ongoing situation and will continue to provide updates as they become available.
This disaster emergency declaration serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for natural disasters such as wildfires. The State urges residents to stay informed about evacuation orders and follow all safety precautions issued by local authorities.
