Colorado Springs: South Academy Boulevard closures planned for upcoming waterline work
TelAve News/10903822
~ Colorado Springs, CO - South Academy Boulevard will undergo significant closures and lane reductions in the coming weeks as part of the ongoing South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project. The closures are necessary for crews to continue their work on underground utility installations.
According to project officials, the closures will take place over two weekends and one weekday in mid-to-late August. However, all schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Access to nearby businesses and properties will remain open throughout the construction process.
The first weekend closure is scheduled for August 14-17, during which time South Academy Boulevard between Astrozon Boulevard and Chelton Road will be closed from 7 p.m. on Friday until noon on Monday. This closure is necessary for crews to install underground waterlines, pave the road, and add striping.
During this closure, northbound traffic on South Academy Boulevard will be diverted east onto Hancock Expressway, then north onto Jet Wing Drive, west onto Chelton Road, before returning to South Academy Boulevard. Southbound traffic will be directed west onto Chelton Road, south onto Delta Drive, east onto Hancock Expressway, before returning to South Academy Boulevard.

The second weekend closure is scheduled for August 21-24 and will affect the section of South Academy Boulevard between Hancock Expressway and Astrozon Boulevard. This closure will also begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and end at noon on Monday. Crews will use this time to continue their work on underground waterline installation, paving, and striping.
During this closure, northbound traffic on South Academy Boulevard will be directed west onto Hancock Expressway, then north onto Astrozon Boulevard before returning to South Academy Boulevard. Similarly, southbound traffic will be diverted west onto Astrozon Boulevard before being directed east onto Hancock Expressway back to South Academy Boulevard.
In addition to these weekend closures, there will also be a lane reduction in effect from August 24-28. Starting at noon on Monday, August 24, northbound South Academy Boulevard will be reduced to one lane between Astrozon Boulevard and Chelton Road. This lane reduction is necessary for crews to continue their work on the waterline installation.
Drivers should also be aware that the ramps connecting Hancock Expressway and South Academy Boulevard will remain closed during construction. Instead, drivers should use the signalized intersection to make right turns and expect minor delays.

The project team has also outlined several other traffic impacts that travelers can expect during construction. These include intermittent lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, temporary pedestrian path and bus stop changes, construction activity near driveways, and relocated bus stops.
Despite these impacts, business access will be maintained throughout the construction process. Drivers are reminded to slow down, follow posted signs, watch for workers and equipment, and allow extra travel time. Alternate routes are encouraged when possible.
The South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project is a voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority project aimed at improving safety, mobility, pedestrian access, and drainage along the corridor. This is the first major reconstruction of South Academy Boulevard since it opened in 1969.
