TelAve News/10867413
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the City of Columbia has announced that all city offices will be closed on Friday, July 4. This closure is in observance of the holiday and normal business hours will resume on Monday, July 7.
Despite the closure of city offices, residential and commercial trash collections will continue as scheduled on Friday. The landfill, however, will not be open to the public on Friday but will resume normal operating hours on Saturday.
In addition, the Solid Waste Utility has canceled the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event that was originally scheduled for Saturday, July 5. Residents are encouraged to download the COMO Recycle and Trash App for collection day reminders and service notifications. Any questions regarding the collection schedule can be directed to the Contact Center at 573.874.CITY (2489).
The city's public transit system, Go COMO, will not be in operation on Friday. However, a shuttle service will be provided by Go COMO Transit between all six City downtown parking garages and Stephens Lake Park for the City's Fourth of July Fire in the Sky celebration. This free service will run continuously from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m., allowing passengers to easily travel between downtown parking garages and the celebration at Stephens Lake Park. The location of these shuttles can also be tracked using the SPOT app.

The Fire in the Sky celebration will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with activities for kids, entertainment, and food trucks. The highlight of the evening will be a fireworks display starting at approximately 9:15 p.m.
Parking enforcement for on-street parking will be suspended on Friday, July 4. Additionally, city parking garages will not be enforced from 6 p.m. Thursday until 8 a.m. Monday. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of any hourly or permit spaces in the city parking garages during this time, free of charge. However, reserved or restricted spaces should be avoided.
For those looking to stay active on the holiday, the City's Activity & Recreation Center (ARC) will operate at reduced hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center, Douglass Family Aquatic Center, and Lake of the Woods Pool will also be open from noon to 5 p.m. However, the Armory Sports and Recreation Center and Hillcrest Community Center will be closed for the day.
While administrative offices for both the police and fire departments will be closed on Friday, all other emergency services will still be available. The Columbia Police Department is reminding residents to drive safely and within posted speed limits if they are traveling for the holiday. They also want to remind residents that possessing or discharging fireworks within city limits is prohibited.
