(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - As the summer heat continues to rise, the city of Columbia is taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. Various cooling centers will be available for those in need, operating during their normal business hours.

The designated cooling centers include the ARC (Activity and Recreation Center), City Hall, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services, Columbia Public Library, Salvation Army, and Salvation Army Harbor House. These centers will provide access to public areas such as lobbies, restrooms, and drinking fountains.

According to city officials, exposure to extreme heat can lead to a range of health problems including heatstroke and even death. Infants and children up to 4 years old, individuals 65 years old and older, and those who are ill or on certain medications are at the greatest risk for heat-related illnesses.

Heatstroke is the most serious of these illnesses and occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature. This can result in a rapid rise in body temperature, failure of the sweating mechanism, and an inability for the body to cool down. If left untreated, heatstroke can be fatal or cause permanent disability.

To avoid heat-related illnesses, officials recommend staying in air-conditioned areas during the hottest hours of the day. The public cooling centers are available for anyone in need.
