(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ On Monday morning, June 29, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) responded to a commercial structure fire in the 1600 block of Hinkson Avenue. The call came in at 7:32 a.m. and CFD companies were dispatched immediately.

Within three minutes of the initial dispatch, multiple CFD companies arrived at the scene to find smoke coming from the second story of a three-story apartment complex. As residents were evacuating, firefighters quickly located a small fire on a balcony at the back of the building and began to extinguish it.

Thanks to the swift response from CFD, the fire was contained to its origin and did not spread to other areas of the building. The flames were under control within three minutes of arrival.

Fortunately, all occupants of the unit had already evacuated before CFD arrived and there were no reported injuries. A total of five fire companies, two chief officers, one safety captain, and one fire marshal with 19 personnel responded to the scene.

The Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion conducted an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that it was most likely caused by improperly discarded smoking materials on the deck area.

The quick response and efficient actions taken by CFD prevented further damage to the structure and ensured occupant safety. The department reminds everyone to properly dispose of smoking materials to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
