(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia's Historic Preservation Commission is seeking to honor properties that have played a significant role in preserving the city's history. The commission has announced that it is now accepting applications for the Most Notable Properties Program.

This program is open to properties that are over 50 years old and located within the city limits of Columbia. It includes a wide range of properties such as houses, parks, and workplaces that have been used for residential, industrial, or commercial purposes. The condition of the property does not matter - it can be endangered, derelict, recently restored, or well-maintained.

According to the commission, what matters most is the property's contribution to the historical and architectural influences that have shaped Columbia's identity. Therefore, whether a property is modest or grand, hidden-away or in plain sight, it can still be considered for this prestigious designation.

To be eligible for consideration, any property nominated for the Most Notable Historic Property program will undergo a thorough review process to determine its historic, cultural, or architectural significance. Once the finalists for 2026 are selected, winning property owners will be notified via email and their properties will be scheduled for a visit to document its history through photography and research.

The owners of these notable properties and their families will also be invited to attend an awards ceremony in May where they will be recognized for their contribution to preserving Columbia's history. This program has been running since 1998 and has recognized nearly 220 properties to date. The City of Columbia encourages all eligible property owners to apply and help preserve the city's rich history for future generations.
