Construction begins on Rock Island Trail extension in east Colorado Springs
TelAve News/10904304
~ Construction has officially begun on a new extension of the Rock Island Trail in east Colorado Springs. The project, which spans over 2 miles, aims to create a more continuous east-west trail connection by adding a pedestrian bridge over Sand Creek, a pedestrian-activated crossing at Peterson Road, and accessibility improvements along the corridor.
The decision to extend the urban trail network was made in response to current gaps and major crossings that limit connectivity in the area. The new 210-foot pedestrian bridge over Sand Creek will serve as a crucial link along the historic Rock Island corridor. Additionally, the new crossing at Peterson Road will greatly improve access for pedestrians, cyclists, runners, and those using mobility devices.
According to Emily Duncan, trails development coordinator for the City's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, "The Rock Island Trail is an important east-west corridor, and this extension will help close key gaps in the trail network while creating a safer, more accessible route for the community." She also added that the new bridge and improved crossing will expand opportunities for recreation and active transportation while enhancing the City's urban trail network.

The construction is expected to take several months with an estimated completion date of this winter. Residents in the area are advised to be aware of any potential impacts from the work and stay updated on construction information as it progresses.
This project is part of the City's ongoing efforts to build out the Rock Island Trail corridor and create a more continuous east-west route across Colorado Springs. In 2024, 1.25 miles of trail improvements were completed between Van Buren Street and Templeton Gap Road. These improvements included widened concrete trails, fencing, a retaining wall, and right-of-way enhancements. This work strengthened the connection between Pikes Peak Greenway and Shooks Run Trail as part of the Legacy Loop.
Funding for this project comes from various sources including Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority II grants from Colorado Department of Transportation, and the Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) sales tax program.
Residents can stay informed about project updates, construction information, and area closures by visiting ColoradoSprings.gov/RITProject. As the City continues to expand its urban trail network, this new extension of the Rock Island Trail will provide a safer and more accessible route for all members of the community to enjoy.
