CONTACT Encourages Connection & Compassion During Suicide Awareness Month

TelAve News/10905192
TOMS RIVER, N.J. - TelAve -- September is Suicide Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind individuals and families that support is always available. CONTACT of Ocean & Monmouth Counties is encouraging the community to recognize the importance of reaching out, listening without judgment, and connecting those in need with trusted mental health resources.

For more than 50 years, CONTACT has provided free, confidential crisis intervention and emotional support to residents throughout Ocean and Monmouth Counties. Available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, the organization's trained volunteer telephone listeners provide compassionate support, information on available resources, and referrals to community services for individuals experiencing emotional distress, loneliness, grief, anxiety, or a personal crisis.

Suicide prevention begins with connection. A simple conversation can remind someone they are not alone and encourage them to seek the help they need. CONTACT's 24/7 Crisis Intervention & Suicide Prevention Hotline offers a safe, confidential place where individuals can speak with someone who is ready to listen with compassion and understanding.

Suicide Awareness Month also serves as an important reminder that social isolation can affect people of all ages, particularly older adults. CONTACT's Senior Reassurance Calling Program helps reduce loneliness by providing regular telephone check ins that offer friendly conversation, emotional support, and peace of mind. The program also helps ensure participants remain connected to family members, caregivers, and community resources, supporting both emotional well being and personal safety.

"Every conversation has the power to make a difference," said Kim Santora, Executive Director of CONTACT of Ocean & Monmouth Counties. "Whether someone is facing a crisis, struggling with loneliness, or simply needs someone to listen, our volunteers are here with compassion, respect, and hope. Suicide Awareness Month reminds us that reaching out can change, and even save, a life."

CONTACT continues to strengthen the communities of Ocean and Monmouth Counties by providing accessible mental health support, crisis intervention, suicide prevention services, and community resource referrals throughout the year. During Suicide Awareness Month and every month, the organization encourages anyone who is struggling or concerned about a loved one to know that help is always available and that no one has to face life's challenges alone.
