BEDFORD, Mass. - TelAve -- To prepare medical coders and clinicians for the biggest change to documentation and coding of obstetrical services in a generation, Libman Education has released two courses: CPT® 2027 Obstetrics Update and CPT® 2027 Obstetrics Update – Clinical Documentation.

The changes to OB coding are effective January 1, 2027. It is anticipated that obstetrical practices and organizations that provide obstetrical services will face significant challenges and should start preparing now.

"Maternity care has become more fragmented, and the global maternity package no longer reflects current practices. The new CPT structure for reporting OB service will use a series of codes to describe the individual services performed," according to Libman Education course author and nationally-recognized coding authority Kim Huey MJ, CHC, CPC-M, CPC, CCS-P, PCS, CPCO, COC. "Education will be needed for coders and billers; providers will need instruction on how to appropriately document services. Conversations will be needed with payers and EHR vendors as well."
