~ A new installation has been unveiled at the Deferrari Hall in Boston's Central Library, showcasing the intersection of design, fabrication, and creativity. The project, titled LEXICON, is a collaboration between the Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) at MIT, the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture, and the Boston Public Library.

Designed by Alfonso Parra Rubio and Erik Strand, both researchers at MIT's CBA, LEXICON features a 23-foot suspended sculpture made from folded aluminum sheets. This innovative approach to construction demonstrates how cutting-edge design and fabrication techniques can create structures that are lighter, stronger, and more sustainable.

According to David Leonard, President of the Boston Public Library, LEXICON is not only a work of public art but also a demonstration of new materials. He believes that this project embodies the library's tradition of sharing ideas and building upon them. Leonard also notes that LEXICON is in line with the library's history of incorporating beauty and geometry-driven architecture into its design.

The installation was launched during FAB26 Boston, an international conference on digital fabrication hosted by the Fab Foundation. This year marks the 22nd edition of the conference which aims to bring together individuals passionate about technology and innovation. LEXICON pays tribute to this movement by bringing cutting-edge fabrication directly into a public space.

Neil Gershenfeld, Director of CBA at MIT, expresses his excitement about showcasing Alfonso's research in aerospace engineering through this installation. He believes that there is a symbiotic relationship between engineering advances and art.

Alfonso Parra Rubio shares his enthusiasm for sharing his research on geometry as both a language and method of making with the public through LEXICON. He believes that too often research remains confined within academic walls and hopes that this project will make knowledge accessible to everyone.

Joseph Henry from the Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture highlights Boston's position as a global center for education, research, and creativity. He believes that LEXICON is a testament to the city's strength in innovation and showcases how artists, designers, and engineers can work together to shape the future.

The installation will be on display until November 1 and can be viewed during the library's regular operating hours. On August 1, MIT researchers will lead a free hands-on workshop for all ages to explore geometry, making, and digital fabrication. This workshop aims to bring the concepts behind LEXICON directly to the public.

LEXICON is not only a celebration of Boston's creative economy but also a reflection of the Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture's vision for the city. By connecting artists, makers, and researchers, they hope to strengthen Boston's innovation ecosystem and ensure that creativity remains at the heart of its future.
