Do Football Coaches Overthink Things?

New Book Extols the Benefits of Simplification to Boost High Performance

GREEN BAY, Wis. - TelAve -- Football is one of the more complicated team sports there is by virtue of the fact there are 22 players in motion on every play, yielding a seemingly limitless combination of variables that must be addressed. Not so fast, maintains author Richie Petersen.

In his new book, Set, Hut! (M&B Global Solutions Inc.), Petersen breaks down the multiple aspects of a football program from leadership to culture and scheme, urging coaches and team executives to rethink their operations with an eye toward building consistently high performance through simplification.

Football fans have seen the scenario play out all too often. The offense comes to the line of scrimmage and we wait … and wait … and wait. Linemen burn energy, holding their stances perfectly still while the defense digs in. Finally, the quarterback calls for the snap as the play clock winds down, only to have the play blow up due to a miscommunication on the audible. Winning football doesn't need to be this complicated.

About the Author

Richie Petersen is an avid and knowledgeable sports fan who grew up in Tillamook, Oregon, playing whatever sport was in season, year round. It was a different time with no social media, no video games, and no computers. His passion for football evolved through the years and eventually became his favorite sport.

This book comes as a result of watching too much horrendous coaching and play calling over the past decades. Richie earned a bachelor of science degree in communications from Oregon State University, where he had a tryout with the basketball team, and remains a diehard fan of the Beavers today from his adopted home of Kaua'i, Hawai'i.
