Governor Abbott Activates State Emergency Response Resources Ahead Of Severe Weather Threat Across Texas

~ As severe weather is expected to hit multiple regions of Texas this week, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure the safety and preparedness of Texans. In a statement released today, Governor Abbott announced that he has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources.

"The State of Texas is taking action to prepare for severe storms expected to affect Texans in North, West, and Central Texas," said Governor Abbott. "Texas stands ready to deploy all necessary resources to support Texans as severe storms move across our state that may bring potential flash flooding and heavy rain. I urge Texans to stay up to date by monitoring local forecast information, make an emergency plan, and heed the guidance of state and local officials. Remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown."

According to the National Weather Service, multiple rounds of thunderstorms that could become severe are expected across Texas beginning today and lasting through the end of the week. These storms are expected to impact multiple regions over several days, with the potential for repeated rounds of thunderstorms that threaten areas of North, West, and Central Texas before shifting eastward.

The primary hazards associated with these storms include large hail and damaging wind gusts, as well as heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding. There is also a possibility for tornadoes.

In response to these potential threats, Governor Abbott has directed various state emergency response resources to be available for support. These include Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads and Urban Search and Rescue Teams from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2), personnel from the Texas Department of Transportation monitoring road conditions, saw crews from the Texas A&M Forest Service assisting with clearing roadways, game wardens and rescue boat teams from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department equipped with helicopters for water rescues.

Other resources available include troopers from the Texas Highway Patrol with helicopters equipped with hoist capability, the Texas Emergency Medical Task Force with Severe Weather Support Packages, and Disaster Assessment and Recovery Agents from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to support agricultural and livestock needs.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas will be monitoring power outages and coordinating with utility providers, while the Railroad Commission of Texas will be monitoring the state's natural gas supply and communicating with the oil and gas industry. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will also be monitoring air, water, and wastewater conditions.

In addition to preparing for severe storms, TDEM and other agencies are also keeping a close eye on increased wildfire conditions. Governor Abbott has already deployed state wildfire response resources to support local operations.

Texans are encouraged to plan ahead for possible severe storm impacts by assembling an emergency supply kit, reviewing their family emergency plans, and staying informed through trusted local sources.
