~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that nine higher education institutions in Texas will receive over $2 million in grants to support free, open educational resources for students in nursing and workforce training programs. These grants are part of the Open Educational Resource (OER) Grant Program, which aims to provide students with access to openly licensed textbooks and course materials through the OERTX digital library.

According to Governor Abbott, Texas schools offer a competitive education for a variety of high-demand careers. He believes that as the state strengthens its workforce in fields such as nursing, cybersecurity, electrical technology, and business, it is crucial for students to have access to the necessary resources to succeed. These grants will expand access to free learning materials and make education more affordable for Texans.

Texas Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser also emphasized the impact of these grants on students' financial burden. He stated that the cost of textbooks and supplies can be a significant expense for college students and that the OER grant program has helped reduce these costs for thousands of Texas students through the continual expansion of the OERTX online library.

The nine institutions receiving awards for 2026-28 are Alamo Community College District, Collin County Community College District, El Paso County Community College District, Lamar Institute of Technology, Lee College, North Central Texas College, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, Texas State University, and West Texas A&M University. Each institution will receive $285,000 except for Texas A&M University - Kingsville and West Texas A&M University which will receive $15,000 each.

These grants will undoubtedly have a positive impact on students' financial burden while also providing them with quality educational resources. With the continuous expansion of the OERTX digital library, more students in Texas will have access to free textbooks and course materials, making higher education more accessible and affordable.
