TelAve News/10879778
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that four schools in West Texas have been awarded Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants totaling over $1.2 million by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). These grants will support career and technical education training programs by providing funding for the purchase and installation of equipment to train students for high-demand occupations such as nurses, welders, and industrial engineering technicians.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in the state's young workforce, stating, "Our workforce's greatest resource are young Texans." He believes that these grants will not only help students discover their career passions but also equip them with the necessary skills to enter competitive industries and contribute to the state's economic growth. The governor expressed his gratitude towards TWC and education partners for their continuous efforts in training the next generation of working Texans.

TWC Chairman Joe Esparza also highlighted the significance of partnerships between employers, schools, and workforce in maintaining a strong economy. He stated, "As these JET grants prepare more than 330 students for high-demand jobs in their communities, they will also foster a more prosperous future for Texas."

The awards were presented earlier today at a ceremony attended by state and local officials, as well as school staff at Odessa College. The four JET grants include a $265,620 grant to Culberson County-Allamoore Independent School District (ISD) to train 50 students as registered nurses in partnership with Odessa College; a $319,520 grant to Denver City ISD to train 141 students as registered nurses in partnership with South Plains College; a $277,101 grant to Iraan-Sheffield Collegiate ISD to train 40 students as welders in partnership with Odessa College; and a $340,145 grant to Seagraves ISD to train 100 students as industrial engineering technicians in partnership with South Plains College.

TWC uses JET grants, funded by the Texas Legislature, to support the development and expansion of career and technical education programs for public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations.
