Governor Abbott Announces Over $1.7 Million In Career Training Grants For Southeast Texas Schools

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that six schools in Southeast Texas have been awarded a total of $1,777,641 in Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). These grants will support career and technical education (CTE) training programs by providing funding for the purchase and installation of equipment to train 410 students for high-demand occupations such as information security analysts, nurses, welders, and more.

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of investing in the state's young and skilled workforce, stating that they are our greatest resource. He believes that this grant funding will provide students with valuable hands-on training to prepare them for future career opportunities.

TWC Chairman Joe Esparza also expressed his support for the JET grants, stating that they are a prime example of aligning industry demand with curriculum to ensure that Texas employers have access to skilled talent to meet their business needs. He believes that these grants will create pathways to economic prosperity for both students and the state.

The awards were presented earlier today at a ceremony held at Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont. TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett presented the awards to representatives from each school in attendance.

The six schools receiving JET grants are Brazosport College, Hitchcock Independent School District (ISD), Kountze ISD, Lamar Institute of Technology, San Jacinto Community College, and West Sabine ISD. Each school will use their grant funds to train students in various high-demand occupations through partnerships with other educational institutions.

Brazosport College received a $356,250 grant to train 75 students as information security analysts. Hitchcock ISD was awarded $190,769 to train 65 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in partnership with College of the Mainland. Kountze ISD received $353,282 to train 90 students as welders in partnership with Lamar Institute of Technology. Lamar Institute of Technology itself was granted $354,853 to train 50 students as electrical and electronics repairers of commercial and industrial equipment. San Jacinto Community College received $189,987 to train 110 students as electrical and electronic engineering technologists and technicians. Lastly, West Sabine ISD was awarded $332,500 to train 20 students as registered nurses in partnership with Lamar Institute of Technology.

The JET grant program is funded by the Texas Legislature every two years and is used by TWC to support the development or expansion of career and technical education programs for public community, state, and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used to train students for jobs in high-demand occupations. The JET grant awards for the current fiscal year have yet to be announced but will be made public in the coming months.
