Governor Abbott Announces Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund Grant To Texas Tech University
TelAve News/10886482
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that Texas Tech University has been awarded a $12 million grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF). The grant will be used to establish a nanotechnology laboratory cleanroom facility at the university's Semiconductor Nanofabrication Center in Lubbock.
Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of Texas as a hub for semiconductor research and development, stating, "Texas is where innovations in semiconductor research and development power future technologies." He also highlighted the significance of this grant in accelerating advanced research on next-generation semiconductors and providing hands-on training to enhance workforce readiness.
The nanotechnology laboratory cleanroom facility will be built and equipped by Texas Tech University's Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering. Its purpose is to promote semiconductor research and workforce training in semiconductor manufacturing. The cleanroom will support various projects focused on driving innovation in solid-state lasers, energy projection and detection components, sensors, and ultra-light high-power electronics.

This grant is a result of Governor Abbott signing the Texas CHIPS Act into law back in 2023. The act established the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF) and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Consortium (TSIC). These programs, administered by the Texas CHIPS Office, aim to leverage Texas' investments in the semiconductor industry, encourage companies to expand within the state, develop expertise and capacity in higher education institutions, and maintain Texas' position as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing.
This investment in Texas Tech University is a testament to the state's commitment to remaining at the forefront of semiconductor research and development. With this grant, the university will continue to play a crucial role in driving innovation and preparing students for high-demand jobs in this rapidly advancing field.
