Governor Abbott, National Cyber Director Launch Project Watershed 250 To Defend Texas Water Supply
TelAve News/10905127
~ In a joint effort to protect Texas water systems from cyber-attacks, Governor Greg Abbott and White House National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross launched Project Watershed 250 today. This initiative will connect Texas water utility providers with cyber defense resources at no cost.
During a roundtable discussion, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of this project, stating that Texas is a leader in cyber warfare and that Project Watershed 250 will help secure communities and water systems from foreign adversaries. By leveraging the expertise of private sector businesses and the Texas Cyber Command, this project aims to make water systems in Texas harder targets for countries like China and Iran.
Project Watershed 250 is a collaboration between the Office of the National Cyber Director and private sector partners who will provide resources to Texas water and wastewater utilities at no cost. This is especially crucial for rural providers who may lack the necessary resources to defend themselves against cyber-attacks.

Governor Abbott has been a strong advocate for cybersecurity in Texas, making it an emergency item during the 89th Legislative Session. The Legislature passed House Bill 150, which created the Texas Cyber Command - the largest state-based cybersecurity department in America. The Governor signed this bill into law in San Antonio, where the Command is located. The Command's responsibilities include defending state and local systems, coordinating incident response, and working with federal partners to protect critical infrastructure.
Joining Governor Abbott at the roundtable were Chief of the Texas Cyber Command Vice Admiral (Ret.) TJ White and private sector leaders who are partnering on Project Watershed 250. Additional photos from the event will be made available when possible.
This joint effort between government agencies and private sector partners highlights the importance of protecting critical infrastructure from cyber threats. With Project Watershed 250, Texas is taking proactive steps to ensure its water systems are secure from potential attacks.
