Governor Abbott Presents More Than $5.8 Million In Grants For South Texas Veterans Groups

~ Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has recently announced the awarding of over $5.8 million in Funds for Veterans' Assistance (FVA) grants to 21 organizations serving South Texas veterans and their families. The grant presentation ceremony, held today, was attended by the Governor himself and other local leaders, as well as representatives from the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC).

According to Governor Abbott, these investments will greatly expand access to critical services for an estimated 2,827 veterans in South Texas. He also emphasized that Texas is ranked number one in America when it comes to veteran services and that these grants will ensure that those who have answered the nation's call receive the very best that the state has to offer.

TVC Executive Director Tom Palladino echoed this sentiment, stating that these grants are a way for the state to pay back its veterans and their families for all they have done for the country and the state. He also highlighted how these organizations provide a network of resources to meet the needs of veterans.

During his remarks at the grant presentation ceremony, Governor Abbott recognized the sacrifices made by American service members and emphasized how Texas takes care of those who have served. He also mentioned that last session, he eliminated bureaucratic barriers to help more organizations provide meals, housing, job training, financial assistance, and other critical services to Texas veterans.

The event was part of TVC's Grants Across Texas Tour, which aims to showcase organizations across the state that are utilizing FVA grant funding to support Texas veterans and their families. In May, TVC Commissioners approved 190 grants totaling over $40.8 million to 160 organizations across Texas. These grants are expected to directly benefit more than 125,000 veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses.

The FVA grant recipients cover a wide range of services including financial assistance, food meal services, housing for Texas heroes, elder care programs, trade skills training, transportation services, and pro bono legal services. Some notable recipients include the City of Corpus Christi, which received $300,000 for food meal services, and the Goodwill Industries of South Texas, which received $200,000 for trade skills training.

Other recipients include the Coastal Bend Council of Governments, Community Action Corporation of South Texas, Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse Coastal Bend, Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity, Gold Crescent Regional Planning Commission, Hidalgo County Community Service Agency, Meals on Wheels South Texas, Nueces County Veterans Treatment Court, and The Salvation Army - Corpus Christi.

The grants will also benefit several counties in South Texas such as Bee County, Cameron County, Hidalgo County (VCO), San Patricio County, Webb County and Zapata County. These counties will receive funding for various programs including housing for Texas heroes and non-clinical mental health services.

Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude to all the organizations receiving grants and commended them for their dedication to serving veterans. He also promised to provide additional photos from the grant presentation ceremony when they become available. With these grants in place, it is clear that Texas is committed to providing the best possible support to its veterans and their families.
