Phoenix, AZ ~ Phoenix, AZ - In a joint effort to protect the long-term health of the Salt River Horse Herd, Governor Katie Hobbs and the Arizona Board of Regents have announced a $325,000 grant to fund a comprehensive genetic viability study. The study will pair state university researchers with natural resource managers and federal wild horse experts to gather data and make informed decisions about the management of the herd.

The decision to fund this study was made unanimously by the Arizona Board of Regents as part of their Regents' Grant program. The two-year study will be conducted by genetics and horse researchers from Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona, with assistance from experts at the US Geological Survey.

To ensure accurate results, the Department of Agriculture has agreed to pause any herd removals under the current management plan for 2026 and 2027 while research is underway. This will allow scientists to establish a baseline for their findings.

The data gathered during this study will provide science-based information for the Arizona Department of Agriculture to use in their future management decisions for the Salt River Horse Herd.
