~ Sacramento, California - Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a special election for California's fourteenth congressional district on August 18, 2026. The proclamation was issued today by the Governor, setting the date to fill the vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives resulting from Representative Eric Swalwell's resignation.
The proclamation, signed by Governor Newsom, states that a special election will be held on August 18, 2026 within the fourteenth congressional district of California. This announcement comes after Representative Swalwell's resignation and marks an important step in filling the vacant seat.

In addition to this news, Governor Newsom also revealed new digital technology at the DMV aimed at fighting identity fraud and reducing wait times. The state-of-the-art digital signature barcodes on driver's licenses and identification cards, along with a streamlined in-office QR code check-in feature, demonstrate California's commitment to proactively combating identity theft.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom is calling on the Trump administration to remove roadblocks to California's expansion of essential health benefits. This includes coverage requirements for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), which is currently not covered under federal law.
California has submitted an application to update its essential health benefits and is urging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to approve it. This would allow for expanded coverage for IVF and other essential health services.
The Governor's office has released a statement urging Californians to stay informed about these important developments and participate in the upcoming special election on August 18, 2026. The full text of the proclamation can be viewed on their website.
