DENVER ~ Denver, CO - Governor Jared Polis of Colorado welcomed a delegation from Yamagata, Japan on Tuesday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their Sister-State relationship. The delegation was led by Governor Mieko Yoshimura, who has been the Governor of Yamagata Prefecture since 2009.

The two governors met at the Governor's Residence at Boettcher Mansion in Denver and signed a joint proclamation declaring it as "Forty Years of Colorado and Yamagata Friendship Day." They will both be giving remarks on the significance of this partnership at 6:30 PM in the Palm Room. Press members are required to RSVP to Ally Sullivan at ally.sullivan@state.co.us.

Governor Polis expressed his excitement for this milestone and the growth that has occurred in both regions since the partnership began. "In the last four decades, Yamagata and Colorado have seen incredible growth, innovation and creativity, and strength in our cultures, our economies and our people," he said. He also noted that it is fitting to celebrate this anniversary as both regions are also celebrating their 150th birthdays.

The Sister-State relationship between Colorado and Yamagata was established in 1986 under Governor Roy Romer. It has since been supported by every governor because each generation has found new value in this important partnership.

Colorado has experienced significant growth since the establishment of this relationship. In 1986, the state had a population of about 3.2 million people. Today, nearly six million people call Colorado home. This growth can be attributed to factors such as high quality of life, love for outdoor activities, and a strong economy.

Speaking of the economy, Colorado has transformed into one of the best places to live, work and do business over the past 40 years. While it was previously rooted in agriculture, mining, oil and gas industries, it now boasts leading sectors in aerospace, renewable energy, information technology and advanced manufacturing. The state is also at the forefront of quantum technology, with collaborations between startups, universities, national laboratories and established companies.

The opening of Denver International Airport in the mid-1990s has also played a significant role in connecting Colorado to the rest of the world. With 35 international nonstop flights, it serves as a major U.S. hub and provides Coloradans with access to communities around the globe. The direct flight to Tokyo has been particularly beneficial in fostering connections between businesses, students, researchers and travelers from both regions.

Looking towards the future, Colorado sees opportunities for further collaboration with Yamagata. These include expanding tourism exchange, connecting companies working in advanced manufacturing and clean energy, strengthening ties among universities and research institutions, and creating more opportunities for student exchange. These partnerships have the potential to bring about greater prosperity, cultural understanding and new opportunities for people in both Colorado and Yamagata.
