Governor Ron DeSantis Directs Florida Board of Governors to Crack Down on H-1B Visa Abuse, Announces Florida DOGE Cancels or Repurposes Millions in Waste and Woke Funding

TelAve News/10879795
TAMPA, Fla. ~ TAMPA, Fla. - In a move to prioritize American workers and crack down on H-1B visa abuse in higher education, Governor Ron DeSantis has directed the Florida Board of Governors to take action. The governor also announced a partnership between Florida DOGE, Federal DOGE, the State University System, and institutional partners to cancel or repurpose millions of dollars in DEI-related grants.

According to Governor DeSantis, many universities across the country have been hiring foreign workers on H-1B visas instead of qualified and available American workers. This practice will no longer be tolerated in Florida institutions.

The state is now requiring institutions to prioritize American graduates and ensure that taxpayer-funded schools are serving the American workforce rather than importing cheap foreign labor. While H-1B visas are intended for specialty occupations, many universities have been using them to fill jobs that could easily be filled by qualified Americans. Additionally, universities are exempt from federal H-1B caps, allowing them to hire foreign labor year-round.

To address this issue, Florida has partnered with Federal DOGE, the State University System, and individual institutions to repurpose or cancel DEI-related grants that were previously awarded with a total intended amount of over $33 million.

Some of these grants were canceled due to their lack of compliance with state and federal laws regarding DEI-centric missions. For example, a $1.5 million grant for "Challenging Anti-Black Racism in Civil and Environmental Engineering Curriculum" was centered around environmental justice and inclusive curriculum for civil engineers. Another grant worth $1.3 million for "Mobilizing Physics Teachers to Promote Inclusive and Communal Classroom Cultures Through Everyday Actions" focused on promoting inclusion and equity in classrooms for women and minority racial groups.

In an effort to align with state and federal laws and ensure appropriate use of taxpayer funds, Florida has repurposed millions of dollars in previously DEI-centered grants. For instance, a $1.5 million grant that was originally focused on promoting "historically marginalized students" in STEM fields will now focus on financial background rather than race or ethnicity. Additionally, a $700,000 National Science Foundation grant that was previously only available to black students has been expanded to include all students regardless of race or background.

Furthermore, Florida DOGE has identified over $10.6 million in grants within the Florida College System that will be repurposed or canceled. This includes a $454,000 grant targeted towards "underrepresented populations" in drone work and avionics and a $750,000 grant exclusively available for minorities pursuing STEM degrees.

Governor DeSantis and the state of Florida are committed to ensuring that taxpayer-funded institutions prioritize American workers and comply with state and federal laws regarding DEI-centric missions. With these actions, they hope to put an end to H-1B visa abuse and promote equal opportunities for all individuals in higher education.
