Homestead Harmony Brings Friendship, Stewardship, And Self Awareness To The Sunny Stella® Series
TelAve News/10906880
Susan Shining-Star follows eleven-year-old Stella through homestead discoveries while introducing young readers to adaptation, inclusion, and primary Raynaud's.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - TelAve -- Author Susan Shining-Star returns to the world of Sunny Stella® with Homestead Harmony, a warm middle-grade story following eleven-year-old Stella Reese as she learns from the land, her community, and her own body. When Stella notices that her hands become cold, numb, and pale more quickly than those of others, a doctor's visit provides an explanation: primary Raynaud's. The diagnosis becomes one part of Stella's continuing life on her family's homestead, where curiosity, friendship, practical learning, and participation remain at the center of her everyday experiences.
Rather than defining Stella by her diagnosis, Homestead Harmony follows her as she learns to recognize early warning signs and make practical adjustments. During an eventful late summer day, Stella and her friends follow a ribbon of smoke to a carefully managed prescribed burn and discover how land stewardship can sometimes involve actions whose benefits are not immediately obvious. Back at the homestead, beet peelings are transformed into natural dye for warm wool mittens, garden grown food brings people together, and a community harvest festival closes beneath a familiar night sky.

The story connects Stella's growing self awareness with a broader lesson about observation. Understanding the environment, another person, or one's own physical signals begins by paying attention and asking thoughtful questions. In Homestead Harmony, Stella's experience with primary Raynaud's does not prevent her from enjoying the work, relationships, and discoveries she values. Instead, greater understanding gives her new ways to care for herself and adapt. The same spirit of curiosity shapes the book's exploration of resourcefulness, agriculture, community cooperation, and responsible care for the land.
Written for middle-grade readers and families, the book presents themes of friendship, stewardship, inclusion, and resilience through experiences grounded in homestead life. Homestead Harmony also encourages curiosity about where food and materials come from, how communities work together, and why listening carefully to both people and the natural world can lead to greater understanding.

Susan Shining-Star continues the Sunny Stella® Series with a story that combines practical discovery with an affirming message about adapting while remaining fully engaged in life. Homestead Harmony includes a foreword by Lynn Wunderman, founder and chairman of the Raynaud's Association®, adding perspective to a story that introduces primary Raynaud's within a larger narrative of childhood curiosity and community. Through Stella's experiences, Shining-Star offers readers a gentle reminder that knowledge can build confidence and that learning to listen to the land, to others, and to oneself can help create greater harmony.
