Humphrey Jr. Returns Brings a Beloved Northern California Whale Story to a New Generation

TelAve News/10906759
SAN FRANCISCO - TelAve -- More than four decades after Humphrey the Humpback Whale captured the imagination of Northern California, his remarkable story is inspiring a new children's book—and the timing could hardly be more extraordinary.

Humphrey Jr. Returns, a new children's story by author Jon Robert Quinn, revisits one of the most memorable wildlife stories in California history through the eyes of an imagined next generation.

In 1985, a roughly 40-foot humpback whale nicknamed Humphrey made an extraordinary wrong turn into San Francisco Bay and continued into the Sacramento River, eventually traveling deep into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. His journey brought crowds to Rio Vista and sparked an unprecedented rescue effort involving scientists, local boaters, government agencies and military vessels. After weeks in the Delta, Humphrey was successfully guided back toward the Pacific and out through the Golden Gate.

Forty years later, Humphrey remains part of Rio Vista's identity. A monument commemorating the legendary whale stands in the community, and his story continues to be remembered as a remarkable moment when an entire region came together around an unexpected visitor.

Now, the story has taken an imaginative turn.

In Humphrey Jr. Returns, a young humpback whale grows up hearing his mother's bedtime stories about his father—the brave and curious whale who once traveled far beyond the Pacific and became a legend along the Sacramento River. As Humphrey Jr. grows older, those stories inspire a journey of his own.

The book is particularly timely following the recent reported sighting of another humpback whale near the Rio Vista Bridge on the Sacramento River, approximately 60 miles inland from the Pacific. The sighting has once again drawn attention to the extraordinary history of humpback whales entering Northern California's inland waterways and naturally brought comparisons to Humphrey's famous journey.

Rather than retelling the original Humphrey story, Humphrey Jr. Returns imagines what it might be like for a son to follow in the path of a father whose adventure became part of California folklore.

The result is a short, heartfelt children's adventure about family, curiosity, courage and the enduring connection between people and the natural world.

For readers who remember Humphrey, the book offers a nostalgic return to a remarkable chapter of Northern California history. For children discovering the story for the first time, it introduces them to a whale whose journey once brought an entire community together.
